 Motor Development in Early Childhood: It’s not all physical (2 CEs)
Child development encompasses physical, language, cognitive, and social-emotional areas, sometimes emphasizing one domain more prominently than others. At the same time, each domain can support the development of the other. This course will cover child development in multiple domains for children age 0 to 3 years old. Domains will include gross motor, fine motor, vision, language and play development which includes cognition, attention and social-emotional areas. Barriers to development will be reviewed, including physical, visual and visual-motor, cognition, and social delays. Warning signs for therapists and discussion of when referrals to other disciplines will be discussed. Case studies will include diagnoses of Developmental Delay, Autism and genetic disorders.
About the Speakers 
Rosemary Gambatese, PT, MSPT Rosemary Gambatese, PT, MSPT, is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University with a BS in Biology and Arcadia University with an MSPT. She is an Advanced Clinical Specialist at Kessler Rehabilitation Center, Flanders, NJ location. She is also an adjunct instructor at Rutgers University School of Health- Related Professions, Department of Physical Therapy, Newark, NJ. For over 20 years, she was a consultant for early intervention in New Jersey for Sunny Days, Inc. and contract therapist for agencies providing physical therapy in school settings. As a school physical therapist, she worked in a variety of public and non-public schools. Practicing for over 37 years, Rose brings a wide range of experience and clinical expertise to her specialty areas of pediatrics and neurology. She has presented for APTANJ in the past including a case study on the use of constraint-induced therapy for a child with hemiplegia and seminars on evidenced-based treatment of congenital muscular torticollis, School PT and Conquering the Sedentary Behavior. Rose has presented a poster at APTA Combined Section Meeting on a novel stroke treatment and co-written articles on vestibular, stroke, and therapeutic exercise topics. 
Kristinne K Gewant, OTR/L Kristinne K Gewant, OTR/L, is a graduate of the University of Scranton with a BS in Occupational Therapy. She is a Senior OT at Kessler Rehabilitation Center’s Flanders outpatient clinic. She has 23 years of experience as an occupational therapist working for Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation Center’s inpatient facility for 5 years, specializing in neurological OT, before transferring to the outpatient department. Over the course of her career she has become a specialist in visual, pediatric and concussion therapy in addition to her specialty of neurological OT. She is a member of Kessler’s Pediatric SIG where she brings her knowledge of neurology, vision and child development to the SIG members across the state. She is also a member of many other Kessler SIGs, including Hand Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pain and Vision, where she shares her knowledge with other staff therapists.
