Trenton, NJ -- Late yesterday at the State House, S3591 and A5256 were introduced in the Senate and Assembly respectively.  These identical bills “Permit certain physical therapists to perform dry needling.”  Senator Nellie Pou (District 35) is the primary sponsor in the Senate while Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez (District 32), Assemblyman Vincent Prieto (District 32), Assemblyman Tom Giblin (District 34) and Assemblyman Tim Eustace (District 38) are the primary sponsors on the Assembly side.

APTANJ sincerely thanks all of these elected officials for working to reinstitute this non-narcotic, pain management technique so that patients can have access and choice to high quality physical therapy care.  We will have more details for our membership as they become available to us.

Since we are at the end of the 217th Legislative Session and there are a limited number of scheduled Committee Meetings and Voting Sessions (this “Lame Duck” session will end on January 8th), it is important to understand the next steps in the process. Both bills will be refiled when the new 218th Legislative Session begins on January 9th. Both bills will be assigned NEW numbers, so we will need to wait until these are assigned before contacting any legislators for their support. Once the new numbers are assigned we will be back in touch with everyone and share our implementation plan.

The legislation initiative to allow New Jersey’s Physical Therapists to perform Dry Needling has begun. In order for us to be successful we will all need to adhere and follow the actions we will be recommending in our plan.  Please continue helping us raise political action money for the PT PLAN on behalf of this cause, but more importantly, the entire profession.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season.
