Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis across the lifespan…for General Outpatient Physical Therapists (1 CE)

This program will serve to review Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), review literature regarding general physical therapy and AIS, train 2 planes of scoliosis screening,  introduce clinicians to 3-Dimensional scoliosis specific exercise method and identify appropriate patients for multi-professional treatment. The Schroth method is based off of the work of Katarina Schroth and furthered by her daughter Christa Lenard-Schroth PT. The Barcelona Scoliosis Physiotherapy School has pursued the continued expansion of this method through decades of clinical practice and research and has brought the formal curriculum to Physical therapists here in the United States.  We will also discuss how this conservative method is integrated into Evidence Based Clinical Practice and how to participate and support a multi-discipline therapeutic team. Finally, clinicians will be introduced to the International society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitaiton Treatment and Scoliosis Research Society and their current positions on conservative scoliosis treatment.

By the end of this program participants will be able to:

  • Identify the 3 dimensions that scoliosis impacts and deviates the spine from anatomical neutral
  • Identify leading causes of scoliosis
  • Describe The Vicious cycle as it relates to scoliosis progression
  • Perform scoliosis screening for transverse and coronal planes with a scoliometer and plumbline
  • Describe how scoliosis specific exercises are integrated across the life span of scoliosis patients
  • Identify patients that are candidates for scoliosis specific 3-D exercise
