Serving the Underserved – the Importance of Trauma Informed Care (2 CEs)

Trauma is ubiquitous. It impacts our neighbors, our friends, our families, and our patients, across racial, socioeconomic, gender, and sexuality lines. It is estimated that 70% of adults in the United States have experienced some type of traumatic event in their lives, totaling 223.4 million people. While trauma knows no bounds, minority groups, including people of color, individuals with low income, and people who identify as non-heterosexual, are disproportionately impacted by trauma.

Trauma, particularly childhood trauma, is linked to increased risk of common health concerns such as heart disease and diabetes, and has also been correlated with increased incidence in pain.

This two hour session will speak to the importance of trauma informed care, as well as practical tips for providers to increase their trauma informed practices. The session aims to provide strategies that are applicable to any population, with examples from minority groups, including LGBTQIA+ individuals, people of color, and individuals with low income.
