Update on the Mechanisms of Manual Therapy (1CE)

There has been a lot of debate over the years which to attribute both positive and negative outcomes from manual therapy.  Manual therapy interventions are a highly used and valuable tool we as physical therapists utilize to help patient outcomes.  However, the effectiveness of manual therapy treatments are highly debated and questioned.  There are a multitude of mechanisms which are thought to describe the effectiveness of manual therapy interventions.  The different approaches as to identifying those likely to respond to manual therapy are being questioned.  The current lack of understanding through which manual therapy is thought to inhibit pain limits many of the hypothesized mechanisms of manual therapy. This discussion will give the clinician the ability to consider multiple thought processes as to which we can attribute our success or lack of success regarding manual therapy.  It will give the clinician the ability to be open minded to different avenues in which manual therapy effects can be attributed to.  The mechanisms of manual therapy are at a crossroads to which its effects are being highly debated.  Hopefully this discussion will allow us as clinicians to be more open minded and reconsider which ways manual therapy is positively or negatively affecting our patients.
