Investigating the Impact of Board Certified Clinical Specialization in Geriatrics

Physical therapy has been recently following the medical model of training in that clinical specialization has become the preferred route of career progression to many within the profession. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) now boasts two subsidiaries related to clinical specialization. These are the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) and the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE). A lack of data and research begs the question, “what does a Board Certified Clinical Specialist do exceptionally well compared to their non-specialist colleagues?” FOX Rehabilitation has invested in clinical specialization for years and has a data set with the size and integrity to begin answering this question. The 2017 FOX Geriatric Clinical Residents, Dr. Nadia Wyrsta and Dr. Mary Callens, conducted a pilot study to begin answering this very question. The profession may have great difficulty moving forward without sound knowledge of the benefits and potential areas of improvement specific to clinical specialization.
